CD
|
The gem of this package is the recording of CJRT's reading on "Of Beren and Luthien." The CD is 68:04 minutes long and is divided into 17 tracks, and comes in a slim slide-in paper case. The CD only has CJRT's reading and has no background music or other unexpected materials. The reading begins with a short introduction, then covers most part of the chapter with just a few omissions on some pages where CJRT summarizes in order to reduce the length, and finally ends with the first paragraph of the next chapter concerning the fate of Beren and Luthien. You might have expected CJRT's voice to be older, but surprisingly it's not, since the reading was actually recorded back in 1977, according to the box. The voice is clear, and the reading and pronounciation is excellent. The CD case has CJRT's introductory notes printed on the inner side(both pages.) The picture below shows the outside.

Map

Opening the "booklet"(which is actually only a cover), you see another booklet attaching to the left side, while the map is attaching to the right. Both items are glued to the cover; as such, you can't really separate them. The booklet has 18 pages of text written by Brian Sibley, consisting an introductory note on Tolkien, a rough outline of the tales told in The Silmarillion, and an index of the location names shown on the map, which is drawn by John Howe. The map has a huge size of 72 x 72(cm).

Book
|
The content of the book is exactly the same as the paperback with black cover. The color of the hardcover is lite grey(same as that of the box and CD case), though sometimes it may look like white. The book is a bit larger than its paperback edition, and is not heavy at all and is easy to open all the way down.

Conclusion: If you're a serious Tolkien collector and a big fan of the chapter "Of Beren and Luthien," this is the item to get. Not to mention that being able to hear CJRT's reading is simply wonderful! Read more reviews on This item at Amazon UK.
