The Masters of Rome series

by

Colleen McCullough

Are you a big fan of ancient Roman history? Or do you just love the legendary Gaius Julius Caesar? By all means, you may want to try the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough, author of the internationally acclaimed bestseller The Thorn Birds.

The first book of the series begins at 110 B.C., a decade before the birth of Julius Caesar, and is centered on the Caesar Family, with which the two great Roman historical figures are closely linked: Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla. In the latter books, Pompey takes over the stage and is soon replaced by Julius Caesar.

These are the books to begin with, if you would love to learn about the history, but would hate to read scholarly written history books. There are war scenes and political plots, treacherous murders and sex, heartfelt moments and tragedies. The author does a wonderful job portraiting the characters back to life while maintaining historical accuracy. Highly recommened for Rome lovers.
