Talking About Tolkien

「Tolkien」以「The Hobbit」、「The Lord of the Rings」兩部奇幻小說風靡全世界，不過「Tolkien」本身也是一位相當出色的語言家與英語學者。年幼的「Tolkien」受到中世紀古詩與北歐神話的影響，對語言產生濃厚興趣，並在求學階段開始研究多國語言和世界文學。「Tolkien」也似乎與生俱來就擁有解讀語言的能力，他可以將一些已經不存在的古老語言所存留下來的文學作品運用語言學的方式加以解碼，然後重新組成新的語言。

「Tolkien」的寫作風格自成一派，擅長描寫意境，但不喜歡運用深奧的單字，與近代的奇幻小說比較起來，「Lord of the Rings」內容也沒有太多的打鬥場景。「Tolkien」也相當喜歡寫詩，故事之間都會穿插一些優美的詩詞，完美運用語言表達豐富的想像力。

「Tolkien」也是20世紀著名的的一位書信家，他從年輕時期就有寫信的習慣，這個習慣從來沒有斷續過，而且不論是寫給朋友或是讀者，「Tolkien」都會重視並且儘量回覆每封信，特別是小孩或老人的來信；目前「Tolkien」所遺留的信件相當珍貴。「Tolkien」同時還是一位說故事的好手，在年輕時期的求學階段，他與一些好友組成一個小型的讀書會，分享自己的創作與心得。後來在牛津任職的階段，他也固定與其他學者相聚，互相朗讀自己的作品，他也經常說枕邊故事給自己的小孩聽。

「Tolkien」畢生奉獻於學術與創作，在文學方面有許多貢獻與改革。他所創造的「Middle-earth」更是許多人的天堂，其內容維妙維肖，意境無人能比，「Tolkien」因此有了「The Master of Fantasy」的封號。

1857
「Arthur Reuel Tolkien」出生 (Tolkien的父親)，英國人，後來搬到南非「Orange Free」州的「Bloemfontein」城市，在當地是一位銀行家。「TOLKIEN」(音：tol-keen) -- 這個名字是源自於德國姓氏的「TOLLKÜHN」，意思是「魯莽」。「JRR Tolkien」的曾曾祖父在18世紀從德國移民到英國，因此「Tolkien」家族很早就已經英化。

1870
「Mabel Suffield」出生 (Tolkien的母親)，英國人。

1889.1.21
「Edith Bratt」出生 (Tolkien未來的老婆)，英國人。

1891.4.16
「Arthur」與「Mabel」在南非結婚。

1892.1.3
「Tolkien」出生於南非，全名「John Ronald Reuel Tolkien」。

1894.2.17
「Tolkien」的弟弟出生於南非，全名「Hilary Arthur Reuel Tolkien」。

1895.4 (Tolkien 3歲)
「Marbel」帶著兩個孩子回到英國渡假，「Arthur」也打算另期回英國。

1896.2.15
「Arthur」因病過逝。同年，「Tolkien」一家人搬到近郊的小鎮「Sarehole」，這裡漂亮的環境給了年幼「Tolkien」深刻的印象，這個影響也將反應在他往後的作品裡。

1904.11.4 (Tolkien 12歲)

母親「Mabel」病逝，年僅34歲。「Tolkien」與弟弟便由好心的牧師「Francis Morgan」擔任監護人直到他們21歲。

1900~1915
求學階段，就讀於「King Edward School」、「St. Philip」、「Oxford」，得有許多獎學金。有語言天份的「Tolkien」在求學階段專攻拉丁文 (Latin)、希臘文 (Greek)、哥德語(Gothic)，並且開始研讀古典英文 (Classic)、古英文 (Anglo-Saxon)、中古英文 (Middle English)、威爾斯語 (Welsh)、芬蘭語 (Finnish)，之後他便開始創作自己的語言--精靈語。

1905
「Tolkien」與弟弟寄住在阿姨家。

1908 (Tolkien 16歲)
「Tolkien」與弟弟搬到新的寄宿家庭，當時這裡也住著一位孤兒，名叫「Edith」，她很會彈鋼琴，會裁縫也會舞蹈。三人很快成了好朋友，她特別對「Tolkien」有好感，因為他彬彬有禮的談吐以及成熟的面貌，而「Tolkien」也被「Edith」的藝術氣質與迷人的姿態所吸引，從此兩人更成為知己。

1909
夏天，兩人相戀。秋天，戀情曝光。監護人「Morgan」不希望兩人再見面。12月，「Tolkien」沒能順利獲得牛津獎學金。

1910 (Tolkien 18歲)
1月，「Tolkien」兄弟換寄宿家庭。3月，「Edith」搬家。「Morgan」表明「Tolkien」在21歲之前不能再與「Edith」見面或有任何形式的聯繫。「Morgan」牧師一直都是很照顧兩兄弟，以前也是「Mabel」的好朋友，因此「Tolkien」只能忍痛佔別「Edith」三年。12月，「Tolkien」獲得獎學金。

1911

「Tolkien」開始牛津生涯。

1913.1.8 (Tolkien 21歲)
「Tolkien」與「Edith」重聚。

1914
第一世界大戰爆發。

1915 (Tolkien 23歲)
「Tolkien」畢業之後便加入了英國皇軍。

1916.3.22
「Tolkien」與27歲的「Edith」結婚；6月，被派到法國參予宋姆戰役 (Battle of the Somme)；同年11月「Tolkien」得了戰壕病，退伍。但是讀書會(T.C.B.S.:Tea Club and Barrovian Society)的兩位好友不幸在戰場喪命(Rob Gilson, Geoffrey B. Smith)。 1916年7月15日，Smith 寫信告知 Tolkien 關於 Gilson 的不幸消息，寫道：

My dear John Ronald,

I saw in the paper this morning that Rob has been killed. I am safe but what does that matter? Do please stick to me, you and Christopher. I am very tired and most frightfully depressed at this worst news. Now one realises in despair what the T.C.B.S. really was.

O my dear John Ronald what ever are we going to do?

Yours ever.

過了不到五個月，Tolkien 從 Wiseman 得知 Smith 也不幸罹難的消息，Smith 在出任務之前寫了最後一封信給「Tolkien」：

My chief consolation is that if I am scuppered tonight - I am off on duty in a few minutes - there will still be left a member of the great T.C.B.S. to voice what I dreamed and what we all agreed upon. For the death of one of its members cannot, I am determined, dissolve the T.C.B.S. Death can make us loathsome and helpless as individuals, but it cannot put an end to the immortal four! A discovery I am going to communicate to Rob before I go off tonight. And do you write it also to Christopher. May God bless you my dear John Ronald and may you say things I have tried to say long after I am not there to say them if such be my lot.

這個打擊毫無疑問地將這只有四個成員的讀書會劃下了句點，也讓僅存的 Tolkien 和 Christopher Wiseman 痛心不已。 Tolkien 退伍之後，將這些感傷的心情寫成一連串的神話故事，這些資料後來編譯為「The Silmarillion」。

「Tolkien」擔任編輯牛津英文字典的職務，任職兩年。

1924 (Tolkien 32歲)
第三位孩子出生，「Christopher J. R. Tolkien」。

「Tolkien」搬到牛津授課；退休於1959年。

1929 (Tolkien 37歲)
第四位孩子出生，「Priscilla M. A. R. Tolkien」(女)。這時「Tolkien」也開始對他的小孩子講一個關於「Bilbo」的有趣故事。

1936 (Tolkien 44歲)
「Tolkien」完成「The Hobbit」。

1937.9.21
「The Hobbit」出版；不久開始創作「The Lord of the Rings」。

1949 (Tolkien 56歲)
「The Lord of the Rings」完成。

1954.7.29
「The Fellowship of the Ring」出版。

「The Silmarillion」出版，手稿完全由兒子「Christopher」一手編譯整理。

Christopher Tolkien

如果我們因為自己的出生年份沒能來得及讓我們參予「Tolkien」傳奇的一生而感到遺憾，那麼我們至少可以因為「Christopher Tolkien」目前仍然在世而替自己感到欣慰，畢竟「Christopher」在許多方面與「Tolkien」很相似，說「Christopher」是「Tolkien」生命的延伸一點也不為過。

「Christopher Tolkien」本身也是一位語言學家，也曾經參與過二次世界大戰，擔任英國皇家空軍飛行員。戰後，他回到牛津完成學業，隨後也在牛津開始擔任教授演講「Anglo-Saxon」、「Middle English」、「Old Norse」。 1975年他放棄了學術生涯，並專心投入整理父親遺留的手稿。

不過這簡短的履歷還不能反映出他在「Tolkien」在世之前心中的地位、在世之後無限的貢獻，以及讀者對他的敬佩。

在「Tolkien」心中，「Christopher」也許是「Tolkien」四個孩子當中最具有特殊意義的。「Tolkien」在一封給「Christopher」的信寫道：

...you were so special a gift to me, in a time of sorrow and mental suffering, and your love...foretold to me, as it were in spoken words...

在撰寫「The Lord of the Rings」的過程中，「Christopher」扮演了極重要的角色。服役前，他是最早閱讀到「The Lord of the Rings」的讀者，而且還協助父親製圖。在服役期間，「Tolkien」也會寫信告知「Christopher」寫作的進度並詢問意見，也會將稿子寄給他閱讀，然後「Christopher」會加以打字成稿寄回。

...I had to call in the help of my son -- the C.T. or C.J.R.T. of the modest initials on the maps -- an accredited student of hobbit-lore... I had to devote many days to drawing re-scaling a large map, at which he then worked for 24 hours (6 a.m. to 6 a.m. without bed) in re-drawing just in time.

「Christopher Tolkien」也曾經是「The Inklings」的成員之一。「The Inklings」是「Tolkien」與一些學者好友在牛津組成的一個讀書會，其中的靈魂人物則是有名的學者「C.S. Lewis」及「Charles Williams」。「C.S. Lewis」也曾經擔任「Christopher」在牛津求學階段的指導教授。 1945年，年僅21歲的「Christopher」受「The Inklings」的邀請成為 "永久會員"，並且取代父親朗讀「The Lord of the Rings」新章節的角色--因為大家都認為他念的比父親好！

"Christopher was always much concerned with the consistency of the story and on one occasion, interrupted: 'Last time, you said Bilbo's front door was blue, and you said Thorin had a golden tassel on this hood, but you've just said that Bilbo's front door was green, and the tassel on Thorin's hood was silver'; at which point Ronald exclaimed 'Damn the boy!' and strode across the room to make a note."

也許是上述種種與父親密不可分的關聯使他對於父親的作品具有高度的保護態度，但這並不能被解釋為任何傲慢的姿態，而是出自於兒子對於父親的愛與執著。從「Christopher」在多個紀錄片的訪談中也可以觀察出他溫和謙虛的學者氣質。

「Christopher Tolkien」長年隱居在法國，是目前「Tolkien 家族」的遺囑執行者。
